The Jeep Liberty (also sold as the Jeep Cherokee) is a compact SUV from DaimlerChrysler. The Liberty was introduced in 2002 with styling inspired by the Dakar and Jeepster show cars. It competes with the Toyota RAV4, Ford Escape, Chevrolet Equinox and Nissan Xterra. The Liberty was the first Jeep to use two new PowerTech engines: A 150 hp 2.4 L I4 and a 210 hp 3.7 L V6. Despite popular belief, the Liberty was not the first Jeep vehicle to use an independent suspension, the Jeep Wagoneer first used it in the 1960s.

4-wheel disc brakes were added for 2003. For 2005, a 2.8 L VM Motori turbodiesel engine became available in the CRD model. Although diesel engines are not familiar in the American market, Jeep reported that they sold 10,000 Liberty CRD models in the first calendar year of sales. Only available is 2005 and 2006, the CRD has since been cancelled because its diesel engine couldn't meet upcoming emissions regulations.

The Liberty has been very successful for Jeep, outselling the Ford Escape in 2005 to become the best-selling compact SUV in the United States. 70 percent of Liberty buyers are new to the Jeep marque, and the Toledo North Assembly factory in Toledo, Ohio is running overtime to produce the model.

The Liberty was nominated for the North American Truck of the Year award for 2002.

With the arrival of the new Jeep compact SUVs Compass and Patriot for 2007, a 2008 Liberty is expected to grow considerably and become a mid-size crossover SUV, with competitors such as the Toyota Highlander, Nissan Murano and Honda Pilot.

In August of 2006, the Chrysler Group announced they were recalling 832,000 Liberty SUVs due to problems with the front suspension lower ball joint. The problem, which affected 2002-2006 models, could potentially cause a loss of steering. Chrysler previously recalled 300,000 Liberty models in 2003 because of a similar problem.

Jeep® designers have gone to the extreme once again, creating two all-new sport-utility-vehicle (SUV) concepts that could expand the Jeep brand into new territory.

The Jeep Patriot and Jeep Compass concepts are compact Jeep 4x4s that would deliver fun, freedom, utility, capability, as well as the potential for exceptional fuel economy and interior flexibility — all at a great value. Making their debut at the 2005 International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt, these concepts hint at two future compact SUVs that the Jeep brand could build for global markets as soon as next year.

With the potential for the powerful yet fuel-efficient all-new 2.4-liter World Engine and a state-of-the-art 2.0-liter diesel (for international markets), the Jeep Patriot and Jeep Compass concepts could be coupled with a new Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). All-new Jeep technology also would give these two concepts Jeep 4x4 capability.

The two very distinct interpretations of a compact Jeep complement each other, yet target different sets of customers who seek great value and fuel efficiency. The Jeep Patriot and Jeep Compass concepts would expand the brand's global lineup, which includes Jeep Commander, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Jeep Liberty (Cherokee outside North America) and the legendary Jeep Wrangler.

Jeep Patriot Concept: A Modern Interpretation of Classic Jeep Styling

Strong and capable, the Patriot concept is unmistakably Jeep, designed to appeal to compact SUV buyers who want traditional Jeep styling with best-in-class off-road capability. Jeep Patriot is rugged, exuding the brand's key attributes of mastery, authenticity, freedom and adventure, but would still offer exceptional fuel economy, interior flexibility and utility at a great value.

"Simple, geometric forms and planar surfaces define Jeep Patriot's timeless, purpose-built design," said Creed. "Patriot's face features Jeep's signature seven-slot grille, a robust bumper, round headlamps, raised, free-standing fog lamps and a visible skid plate. All of this gives Jeep Patriot its robust, strong, capable off-road image."

Painted Armour Green with black door handles, body-side moldings, black accents, dark tinted windows and a stiffer windshield, Jeep Patriot would be built for maximum cargo volume, rugged driving conditions and excellent utility. Four doors and a rear liftgate provide easy access to the Jeep Patriot concept's spacious and functional interior.

Classic Jeep design cues include aggressive 17-inch off-road wheels and tires housed inside signature Jeep trapezoidal wheel openings. These combine with a raised roof rack that can hold additional gear to provide a no-nonsense, functional statement. Jeep Patriot's higher beltline completes the vehicle's protective profile.

The rear of the vehicle features an upright backlight and a bold bumper that further illustrate the Jeep Patriot concept's interior spaciousness and add to its rugged appearance and capability.

Jeep Patriot not only looks like a Jeep, but all-new Jeep off-road technology would ensure Jeep Patriot could be a Trail Rated 4x4, which would make it the most capable vehicle in its class.

Jeep Compass Concept: A New Type of Jeep in a Contemporary Package

Sleek and sophisticated with a rally car toughness, the Jeep Compass concept would deliver Jeep fun, freedom and capability, broadening the global appeal of Jeep and attracting new buyers who might not have previously considered the brand.

"The Jeep Compass concept is an all-new kind of Jeep," Creed said. "Compact and nimble, the Jeep Compass concept is the right size for world markets and would offer performance, fuel economy and value in the highly competitive compact SUV segment."

True to Jeep's signature design cues, the Jeep Compass concept features the brand's signature seven-slot grille, round headlamps, large and capable fog lights and trapezoidal wheel openings.

A steeply raked windshield, an expressive hood, low-to-the ground stance, deep fascia, wire mesh grille texture and prominent lower intake give the Jeep Compass concept a powerful and capable appearance.
The Jeep Compass concept's side profile is highly sculptured. Powerful fender forms exaggerate the Jeep Compass concept's athletic stance, performance 19-inch wheels and red-line tires.

From the rear, a roof-mounted spoiler completes the Jeep Compass performance message. The deep fascia is uniquely styled to accommodate a large chrome dual exhaust system, which also reinforces an aggressive, performance-oriented character.

Chrysler Group LLC released images of the new 2011 Jeep Patriot, the affordable compact sport utility vehicle (SUV) that offers consumers segment-leading capability and unsurpassed 4x4 fuel economy, along with classic, rugged Jeep styling.

Jeep Patriot's classic exterior styling and capability are enhanced for 2011 with new front and rear fascias, a body-color grille, and an increased 4x4 ride height. Ride-and-handling is refined courtesy of retuned steering and suspension systems. Interior enhancements round out the new-for-2011 features, and include significantly upgraded touch points.

"Patriot boasts class-leading 4x4 capability and unsurpassed fuel economy, and a host of safety features in a fun and affordable package - a combination that only Jeep can offer," said Mike Manley, President and CEO - Jeep Brand, Chrysler Group LLC. "For 2011, Jeep Patriot is even more appealing to consumers, thanks to rugged new exterior styling, interior enhancements and refinements to the suspension and steering systems."

New-for-2011 Jeep Patriot exterior highlights include an aggressive new front fascia with standard fog lamps positioned inside the headlamps; a new rear fascia that extends lower than on previous models; a body-color grille; new available 17-inch wheels; four new colors and 4x4 ride height that has been increased by 1 inch.

Interior upgrades for the 2011 Jeep Patriot include new soft touch front-door trim panels with a padded upper surface; new center armrest; a new Jeep steering wheel with integrated controls that allow the driver to operate the radio, cruise control, hands-free phone and other vehicle functions while keeping their hands on the wheel; new cloth interior, with premium cloth bucket seats in the front; standard speed control on all models; new backlighting of door switches, door locks, windows and power mirror controls and standard automatic temperature control on the Latitude X model.

Available as a stand-alone option on all models for 2011 is the Uconnect® Voice Command with Bluetooth for hands-free calling and music/radio/SIRIUS satellite radio control.

The 2011 Jeep Patriot offers customers more capability than any other vehicle in the compact SUV class. Capability features include low-range mode which generates a best-in-class 19:1 crawl ratio, brake traction control, 19-inch water fording capability, Hill Descent Control, 4x4 Lock shift-on-the-fly which sends 50 percent of torque to front and rear wheels, and a maximum tow rating of 2,000 lbs. The Jeep Patriot also boasts a retuned suspension for 2011, with higher spring and damping rates, added rebound springs, and an increased diameter of the rear sway bar. Despite these numerous capability features, the 2011 Jeep Patriot boasts unsurpassed 4x4 fuel economy in its segment.

The Jeep® Trailhawk concept merges the spectrum of the Jeep brand by combining the core off-road features of the new body-on-frame four-door Jeep Wrangler Unlimited with the refined sophistication of an all-new on-road open-air concept vehicle, providing a unique and fresh expression for Jeep. Built off the new Wrangler platform, the Jeep Trailhawk is a more refined highway cruiser without sacrificing any of Jeep's legendary off-road capabilities.

"The key to the look of the Trailhawk," said Nick Vardis, Principal Exterior Designer, "is the vehicle's distinctive proportions, due in part to its 116-inch wheelbase. The dash-to-front-axle dimension is dramatically long, giving the vehicle a sense of forward motion, while the front and rear overhangs are tight and abbreviated."

Vardis said the body side is muscular and broad-shouldered, with the sheet metal pulled into shape, much like a drawn arrow in the bow of a skilled archer. Even the pillars are pulled back. The forward motion of the body is further accented by the drive of the raising beltline.

The stance is broad, and the wheels, pushed to the corners of the vehicle, are enclosed in robust flares dramatically offset from the body. Partly trapezoidal in shape, yet not asymmetrical, these angular, crisply-contoured wheel flares reinterpret one of Jeep's fundamental design cues.

"The flares are stretched and pulled taut at one end," Vardis said. "Each presents a 'long side' angled toward the center of the body."

The body in turn tapers toward the front in plan view to expose more of the flares and accent the wide stance. The flares enclose large 22-inch, five-spoke wheels, each with a hefty 34-inch overall diameter. The specially-crafted tires are accented by a red stripe, with the red color repeated on the exposed brake calipers.

The lower body, which kicks outward along the bottoms of the doors, intersects the flares crisply. Tucked beneath this horizontal element is a recessed running board, accented by a silver molding. A tall trapezoidal vent, located at the front fender-front door cut line, is home to the circular Trail Rated badge.

The Trailhawk's long hood is fronted by a signature seven-slot Jeep grille angled rearward to match the lean-back surface of the forward flares, with the slots filled with a mesh texture. Bracketed between the grille and the flares, the chamfered headlamps mimic the lean-back stance. Beneath their clear flush lenses, HID projector beam quad lamps nestled into twin "telescopic" polished aluminum barrels light the way forward while LEDs, configured in parallel stripes provide park and turn signals.

"The main headlamp units are cropped diagonally across the top," said Vardis. "They peer out from an angled brow, giving the vehicle its bold, sinister look. In front view, the left and right lamps evoke the hooded eyes of a bird of prey.

"Like other concepts, we first viewed the math surface of the grille and headlamps together in the computer" added Vardis. "We immediately noticed the hawkish expression, hence the name 'Trailhawk.'"

The taillamps mimic the look of the headlamps, including the striped turn signals, with the surface of the liftgate carved away.

The vehicle's upper structure is set onto the lower body, encased by a crisp, chamfered 360-degree molding that runs around the greenhouse, accenting the high, arching beltline. At the base of the windshield is a seven-slot cowl screen that reprises the grille. The body is painted in Argent Pearl high-gloss, with the flares and lower body a slightly darker low-gloss variant.

The side windows retract fully into the body, leaving no B-pillar above the belt, while the diagonal quarter windows are also fully retractable. Gray-tinted twin longitudinal glass panels over the first- and second-row seats and the glass panel over the cargo compartment are removable, as is the swing-up backlight. With all the glass lowered and removed, the Trailhawk offers occupants virtually the same open-air ambience as a typical soft top Jeep. The fixed central spine contains overhead lighting and several integrated storage bins.

"The Jeep Trailhawk interior emphasizes the vehicle's open air-freedom, inviting elements of the exterior theme into the interior,"said Cliff Wilkins, responsible for the interior design. "Tough mechanical elements which evoke exterior details are contrasted with sophisticated materials and finishes to give a modern, rugged, purposeful interior while delivering a premium off-road experience."

The four-passenger interior is dominated by two major design elements —the cross-car instrument panel (I/P) form and a full-length central spine which forms the floor console. The AC outlets, center stack compass/inclinometer, and the dimensional, double-deck "biplane" gauges are housed in circular casings having the appearance of machined aluminum, with detailing matching headlamp surrounds. The two-tone leather-wrapped aluminum steering wheel features vertical individual switches for lights and speed control.

Riding the transmission tunnel, the console's raised walls create a full-length open bin, handy for the storage of sundry items. Within the console's side rails, two front/rear combination armrest/storage bin modules, movable via concealed tracks, can be positioned fore-aft at the occupants' discretion. Using the familiar touchpad technology of laptop computers, a flip-out pad for the remote control fold-away flat screen navigation unit is housed in the forward armrest.

"The open console's unique utility is enhanced by the relocation of the transfer case 'Terrain Selector' switch to the center stack of the I/P," said Wilkins. "Also, there is the use of an electronic gear selector/park brake lever mounted to the right side of the steering column to continue this effect."

Additional storage is available forward of the drop-open center stack control module, and in the lower door trim panels.

The driver and three passengers can relax in individual premium leather seating in Bark Black and Firewood Orange. The vehicle's floor is a durable spray-finish with integrated non-slip heel pads, practical for all-weather use.

In the cargo area, each quarter panel houses a removable, portable "audio pod" sound system. Handsome in their rectangular dark gray cases accented with silver circular speaker bezels, each "pod" is fitted with a dock for an MP3 player. For carrying of first aid or road hazard gear, jerry-can style boxes in easy-to-find Firewood Orange are mounted forward of the speaker "pods."

The utility of the cargo area is enhanced by a drop-down tailgate featuring integral concealed storage, four cup holders, and a sliding Load 'N Go cargo tray with movable partitions that roll rearward for easy retrieval of stored items.

"One of the most remarkable things about the interior," concludes Wilkins, "is that it was designed and surfaced entirely electronically — there were no traditional sketches or 3-D models. Even so, the interior turned out just as we had envisioned."

The Jeep brand is expanding into new territory with the all-new Jeep Compass - a modern-styled compact Jeep that delivers a competitive package of size, performance and fuel economy.

The Compass extends the Jeep brand to compete for the first time in the compact sport-utility vehicle (SUV) segment and is the first Jeep vehicle to offer fuel economy in excess of 43 mpg, on the combined cycle with its diesel engine, which is best in class. Compass will also be the Jeep brand's first front-wheel-drive-based product and also the first with a fully independent suspension for comfortable on-road ride and handling.

Peter Lambert, Managing Director of Chrysler Group UK, said: "The Jeep Compass is designed to reach younger and female customers who may not have previously considered the brand but value the distinctive Jeep look and see four-wheel drive as a must-have on their daily drive. Customers are increasingly interested in family hatchbacks with four-wheel drive systems as they offer better handling and enhanced safety on the road.

"The new Jeep Compass offers a roomy interior, a choice of fuel efficient diesel and petrol engines and an all-new Freedom Drive 4WD system in a package the size of a Ford Focus."

Freedom Drive I is a full-time, active four-wheel-drive system that offers the driver tangible benefits in every day driving conditions such as wet and icy tarmac.

"This family hatchback sized car represents a new chapter in the history of the Jeep brand - the compact 4x4 segment in Western Europe is expected to increase to nearly 400,000 units by 2010, and this new car-based four-wheel drive vehicle means the Jeep brand is ideally placed to meet this growing demand."

"The whole compact-4x4 segment is shifting - our competitors are pricing themselves out of the sub-£20,000 segment and we aim to fill this space this year."

In the UK the Jeep Compass Limited model will launch in May 2007 with a VW-sourced 2.0-litre six-speed manual diesel engine and 2.4-litre petrol engine with a five-speed manual or a CVT automatic gearbox. The Jeep Patriot shares the Compass platform and engines, but has a more traditional Jeep look and design. The Jeep Patriot Sport and Jeep Patriot Limited models launch in July 2007 and will be the new entry-level price point for the Jeep brand (pricing to be confirmed). The Jeep Compass will be priced from £17,995.

All Jeep Compass models are covered by the comprehensive Jeep warranty scheme, which provides a three-year/60,000 mile mechanical warranty, seven-year anti-corrosion warranty and 12 months European roadside assistance.

DESIGN

Sleek and sophisticated, the all-new Jeep® Compass broadens the global appeal of the Jeep brand by attracting new buyers who may not have previously considered the brand. Jeep design falls into two categories: Jeep Classic and Jeep Modern. Jeep Compass epitomises Jeep Modern design and introduces it to the compact sport-utility vehicle (SUV) segment.

The Jeep Compass features a fresh look with traditional round Jeep headlamps and seven-slot grille, muscular body-side flares, a strong stance and sweeping roofline, combined with the versatility of five doors. It is designed to appeal to customers who want four-wheel-drive capability, combined with competitive fuel economy and an attractive price point.

"Compass represents a new adventure for the Jeep brand," said Trevor Creed, Senior Vice President of Design, Chrysler Group. "Compass fulfils the demands of customers who want a Jeep that is modern, stylish and refined, but still offers the credibility and characteristics associated with the Jeep brand name."

Modern Take on a Classic

This all-new compact SUV is firmly rooted in its Jeep design heritage, featuring the brand's signature seven-slot grille, round headlamps and trapezoidal wheel openings. However, there also are several modern design twists that distinguish Compass from traditionally styled Jeep vehicles.

Jeep Compass features an all-new silhouette, with a steeply raked windscreen, expressive bonnet and deep fascia, which combine to give it a modern, yet capable appearance. The profile of the windscreen, front fascia and A-pillar were developed in the wind tunnel for aerodynamics to improve fuel economy and to reduce wind noise. The bonnet is stamped from steel and includes a small lip on the trailing edge to help direct airflow over the windscreen wipers. Standard round fog lamps set within the fascia add a touch of sportiness and improve visibility in bad weather.

Jeep Compass' side profile features uniquely sculptured fender forms delivering a fresh, athletic interpretation of the traditional Jeep trapezoidal wheel flares. Compass rides on a 2635mm (103.7-in.) wheelbase with a 1520mm (59.8-in.) wide track. The wheel placement enhances vehicle stability, vehicle dynamics and ride quality.

Large wheels and tyres combined with the Compass' suspension design contribute to 200mm (7.9 in.) of ground clearance. The low-profile design of the rear suspension also maximises rear seat and cargo room.

Jeep Compass' exterior components are both sophisticated and functional. The Compass Limited model features standard bright body-side moulding. Large, black exterior mirrors tuned in the wind tunnel maximise the driver's field of view, while minimising drag and wind noise. While the front door handles are placed on the sheet metal, the rear door handles are mounted on the C-pillar to preserve the character line that is stamped in the rear doors. Black graphic appliqués on the centre pillars and the flush-mounted rear quarter glass, combined with the black belt moulding and black roof-rail moulding, provide the illusion of a single window opening from A- to D-pillar.

An integrated black full-length roof rack and rail moulding with a soft edge channels water over the roof and provides a smooth fit and finish. The roof rack is functional and features five tie-downs for securing items.

Jeep Compass' functional spoiler, tuned for aerodynamics, also maximises the rear view and extends the vehicle's roofline. A six-light-emitting diode (LED) centre high-mounted stop lamp and washer nozzle are integrated into the spoiler.

A one-piece steel liftgate provides easy access to Jeep Compass' spacious interior. The liftgate construction includes a one-piece steel inner and outer panel for structural integrity. It gets its unique shape from the light bar that spans across the back of the vehicle. The body-colour light bar is deeply dished and houses lights for the license plate. Modular taillamps fill the corners, and the Compass name is embossed on the rear fascia. A black step pad with a non-skid surface further enhances the Compass' utility and practicality.

All Jeep Compass models will be available in Steel Blue Metallic Clear Coat, Bright Silver Metallic Clear Coat, Inferno Red Crystal Pearl Coat and Black Clear Coat.

Flexible, Functional Interior with Clever Innovations

Jeep Compass' interior combines functional style, comfort and versatility in an appealing and surprisingly roomy package. Compass' flexible interior gives buyers the capability to do more in terms of seating passengers and storing gear.

A command-of-the-road seating position that is 5.1cm (2 in.) higher than Dodge Caliber gives Jeep Compass drivers an added feeling of control.

All models feature a two-toned leather dark slate/pastel slate colour interior, clever features in the instrument panel and centre console, and versatile seating and storage. Jeep Compass includes a front passenger seat that folds forward to create a table-like surface for versatility and makes way for storing gear - everything from a 2-metre (8-foot) ladder to skis or snowboards. Folding the 60/40 split rear seatbacks forward creates a nearly flat load surface, maximising storage in the Compass. The fold-flat rear seats also recline to provide added flexibility and comfort.

Jeep Compass has nearly 100cm (39.4 in.) of rear seat leg room and up to 1277 litres (45.1 cu. ft.) of cargo space with the rear seats folded flat.

In addition to interior spaciousness and flexibility, Jeep Compass has many clever and unique interior features available that add functionality for a compact SUV, including:

Jeep Compass' cluster area is large for a compact SUV and features four gauges. The Compass Limited model features a painted silver bezel. Cluster gauges feature black with white graphics and orange pointers, as well as LED for illumination.

The instrument panel provides convenient storage compartments for added utility. The glove box door swings down to provide a large, single bin for storing the owner's manual and other documents out of sight, while an open bin above the glove box provides additional easy-to-reach storage space.

The centre stack, which features a Silver Alloy painted bezel to complement the instrument panel, includes air registers that can be closed so there is no perceivable air flow, as well as the radio, climate controls, the switch bank for optional heated seats and the transaxle shifter. These components are all within easy reach of the driver and passenger. A cubby for storing small items is located beneath the radio.

Jeep Compass also features a gated shifter, a feature typically found on premium vehicles. The shifter features a black and bright shifter cap with the Jeep name featured in the centre with styling details similar to the shifter in the Jeep Commander. The bezel includes an illuminated PRNDL indicator to make it easy to see when driving at night.

ENGINE PERFORMANCE

Fuel economy is a key factor in the four-cylinder gasoline engine market. The Chrysler Group World Engine family, which is based on a joint venture between DaimlerChrysler Corp., Hyundai Motor Co. and Mitsubishi Motors Corp., is targeted to improve fuel efficiency by five per cent compared with the engines they replace - rivalling the best four-cylinder engines in the world.

The Jeep Compass is available with the 2.4-litre petrol World Engine with dual Variable Valve Timing (VVT), which helps optimise the torque curve at all speeds. This World Engine, with 168 bhp and 220 Nm (162 lb.-ft.) of torque, produces more power, better fuel economy and a smoother, quieter ride than engines without dual VVT. The 2.4-litre engine places Compass amongst the best in the segment for power, torque, top speed, acceleration and towing capacity, all with fuel economy that is comparable to lower displacement engines.

"The World Engine program allows us to build premium features into the Jeep Compass' power plant without a premium price," Lyons said. "We set high targets and achieved those targets to meet customers' high demands for fuel economy, refinement, durability, quality and performance."

Chrysler Group brought its engineering expertise to the World Engine program in the areas of cylinder port and intake manifold design using advanced Computational Fluid Dynamics tools. Chrysler Group engineers led the development work on dual VVT, as well as an integrated 2:1 oil pump/balance shaft assembly. Chrysler Group engineers also refined the engines for exceptional smoothness and sound quality, resulting in a pleasant engine feel and sound for the customer.

2.0-litre Turbo Diesel Engine

The 2.0-litre engine is a state-of-the-art, direct-injection turbo diesel power plant with high-pressure fuel injection, a variable geometry turbocharger and four valves per cylinder. The injectors are electronically controlled, leading to high power and torque and optimal fuel efficiency. The turbo diesel engine positions the Jeep Compass competitively in its class for power, torque, top speed, acceleration, towing capacity and fuel economy. Maximum power is 138 bhp, and peak torque is 310 Nm (229 lb.-ft.).

"Advanced diesel engine technology is readily available and can dramatically reduce the amount of crude oil consumed worldwide," Lyons added. "European customers especially want modern diesel engines with outstanding performance and efficiency, so from the beginning of the program, our engineers included a diesel engine as part of Jeep Compass' powertrain plan."

Manual Transaxles Add Efficiency and Sportiness

Jeep Compass' 2.4-litre petrol World Engine is mated as standard to a Magna Driveline T355 five-speed manual transaxle with overdrive and synchronised in all forward ratios. The 2.0-litre turbo diesel engine is paired with an Aisin BG6 six-speed manual transaxle with a three-shaft gear train.

Both manual transaxles provide high performance, durability, quiet operation and smooth shifting. Fuel economy is also enhanced through efficient operation. For both, the shifter is packaged in the centre stack within easy reach of the driver.

New-generation Continuously Variable Transaxle Improves Fuel Economy

The 2.4-litre petrol World Engine is also available with an optional automatic Continuously Variable Transaxle (CVT). The all-new Jeep Compass uses the newest generation of CVT, offering several advantages compared with previous CVTs.

The Jeep Compass' CVT continuously varies the transaxle ratio, providing an infinite number of gear ratios and allowing the engine to stay in its most efficient operating range. The transaxle uses two "V" pulleys and a steel push belt to vary the input speed to output speed ratio instead of traditional discrete gear ratios activated by clutches or bands.

Through the use of electronic controls, Jeep Compass' CVT provides a familiar engine feel while delivering improved fuel economy. For example, drivers will experience an appropriate rise in engine RPM during acceleration rather than an instant rise to the maximum engine RPM.

"Our engineers have calibrated Compass' CVT to provide a throttle response that feels very natural to the driver," said Lyons. "We've also created an available Auto Stick feature that gives the driver manual control and the feeling of six stepped gears," Lyons added.

Chrysler Group's CVT contributes a six-eight per cent improvement in fuel economy compared with a traditional four-speed automatic transaxle. Eliminating upshifts allows the transaxle to engage the torque converter clutch almost immediately when accelerating and to keep it engaged throughout speed changes. This eliminates torque converter slippage common in stepped transaxles and results in more efficient operation, especially during city driving.

The CVT also improves vehicle performance compared with a traditional automatic transaxle. Optimised gear ratios, especially in the 30-60 mph range, improve Jeep Compass' passing manoeuvres and contribute to a responsive feel and ultimate smoothness.

In the UK, the Jeep Commander is available in two models - Predator and Limited - both with a Mercedes-Benz 3.0-litre diesel engine.

Modern interpretation of heritage design with rugged look and a premium interior The Jeep Commander's upright windscreen, backlight and rear end, as well as its more vertical body sides and side glass, embody the vehicle's classic Jeep styling. The side-view mirrors are also bold and purpose-built. Overall, Commander looks strong and confident because of its classic Jeep styling - upright and rugged. Commander engages the emotions because it is steeped in the heritage of Jeep design - integrating the past and present.

"The original Jeep Cherokee is an authentic, classic shape that is rooted in the public consciousness," said Donald A. Renkert, Senior Manager/Jeep Studio, Chrysler Group Product Design Office. "By reinterpreting that vehicle, and other classic Jeep vehicles of the past, the Jeep Commander elicits nods of recognition from consumers, even though it is a brand new vehicle. There is a sense of deja vu about the Commander that brings knowing smiles of satisfaction. It is all-new and timeless at once."

The satisfaction continues inside the vehicle, where great attention to detail is clearly evident. From the gear shift knob, to the four round gauges in the instrument cluster, to the new steering wheel, Jeep Commander is refined and uniquely Jeep in appearance.

The seats are supportive and comfortable and, for the first time in a Jeep, there are now three rows of them. With each row slightly higher than the one in front of it, this distinctive "theatre-style" arrangement improves forward visibility for every passenger and delivers an optimal all-round view. The second- and third-row seats fold forward to create a flat load floor. Jeep Commander is only 37 mm (1.5 in.) longer than the latest Jeep Grand Cherokee, even though it accommodates its three rows of seats. Since they share the same Jeep 4x4 systems, powertrains and wheelbase (2780 mm/109.4 in.), Commander is just as manoeuvrable and off-road capable as Grand Cherokee.

The Jeep Commander's stepped roof provides second- and third-row occupants with plenty of head room. Complementing the available front-mounted sun roof is Command-ViewTM the new and innovative skylights (complete with shades) over the second row of seats.

The lower portion of the dashboard panel is shared with Grand Cherokee, but the top section is all-new and prominently features four pairs of circular adjustable air vents and proudly displays 16 Allen head bolts (14 are functional) that also contribute to the mechanical, constructed look of the vehicle. Both the steering wheel centre and the gear selector knob present the Jeep logo framed in a bright ring with exposed simulated Allen bolt heads to continue and enhance the overall design theme. A precise four-dial instrument cluster with LED illumination features black gauges with white graphics and red pointers for reading ease in all conditions.

Seating seven in style

The Jeep Commander has "theatre-style" seating that enhances the functionality of its three-row, seven-passenger layout. The second-row seats are mounted 117.3 mm (4.62 in.) higher than the front row, and third row seats are 120.45 mm (4.74 in.) higher than the second row - to ensure all occupants enjoy an excellent view of the surrounding cityscape or countryside.

The second-row 40/20/40 split seats are engineered so the outer sections fold down and tumble forward to allow passengers entry or exit from the third row on either side of the vehicle. All three second-row seatbacks can be folded onto the cushions to form a flat-load area.

For maximum comfort, Jeep Commander has an available heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning system in the third row. Fully independent of the front system, it feeds warmed or cooled air to a single floor-level outlet and two circular rotating outlets on each side of the rear trim.

As well as seating seven in style, the Jeep Commander accommodates amazing space for passengers and cargo. With seven on board, there is room for 212.4 litres of luggage. Folding the third-row seats expands the cargo space to 1027.9 litres and also folding the second row gives a total of 1939.7 litres.

Engineered to go anywhere, do anything

Class-leading off-road capability and on-road refinement were mandatory for the Jeep Commander. So the Jeep engineering team went to the head of the class: they provided Commander with the same 4x4 systems, suspension and powertrains as the award-winning Jeep Grand Cherokee, including an independent front suspension and rack-and-pinion steering.

"Jeep Grand Cherokee reset the SUV benchmark with its on-road refinement, off-road mastery and overall performance in key areas of customer satisfaction," said Hausch. "Now the seven-passenger Jeep Commander, with the 3.0-litre CRD V-6 engine is a compelling package for many customers in Europe and other international markets."

NEW ENGINES DELIVER PERFORMANCE AND POWER

The 3.0 CRD engine is a "next-generation" power unit from DaimlerChrysler producing class-leading levels of power and torque - giving it immense towing ability - with efficient fuel economy. Based on the latest Mercedes-Benz technology, Bosch high-pressure fuel injection (1600+ bar), a variable geometry turbocharger and four valves per cylinder, the new V-6 engine meets Euro 4 emissions standards. Additionally, the Jeep Commander's diesel emission system is equipped with a standard diesel particulate filter.

Maximum power is 160 kW (215 hp DIN) and peak torque is 510 N•m (376 lb.-ft.) from just 1600 to 4000 rpm. The accelerator pedal is modified to reduce transmission kick-downs during normal driving but still allow for full pedal travel when quicker acceleration is demanded by the driver.

TWO AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS OFFER PREMIUM REFINEMENT

The 3.0 CRD engine is mated to a five-speed W5A580 automatic transmission that offers smooth shifts and optimum fuel economy with the diesel engine.

This transmission features Electronic Range Select driver interactive shift control. The transmission provides fully automatic shifting in the "drive" position or the driver can manually select each gear sequentially by moving the shift lever left or right from the "drive" position. This gives the driver precise control to match any on-road or off-road driving conditions.

SOPHISTICATED SUSPENSION PROVIDES CONFIDENT RIDE AND HANDLING

The Jeep Commander shares its suspension and running gear with the Jeep Grand Cherokee. This includes short- and long-arm front suspension that provides the driver with a greater sense of precision and control, and more precise steering, without compromising Commander's stalwart off-road performance. The tight turning diameter of 11.2 m provides for nimble handling.

The Electronic Stability Programme (ESP), which is standard, aids the driver in severe driving manoeuvres on any type of surface. ESP uses signals from sensors throughout the vehicle to determine the appropriate brake and throttle adjustments for directional stability.

CLASS-LEADING FOUR-WHEEL-DRIVE CAPABILITIES

Quadra-Drive II® is one of the most advanced four-wheel-drive transfer case systems available, providing Jeep Commander with best-in-class tractive capability. Electronic Limited Slip Differentials - front and rear - offer customers the ultimate in off-road capability. Quadra-Drive II provides electronic engagement of torque biasing for the front axle, as well as the rear. The Jeep brand and Activision Publishing, Inc. announced that Jeep has been named exclusive automotive partner of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, the year's most anticipated entertainment launch, which will be released on November 8, 2011. This marks a second chapter in a joint promotion that Jeep and Activision began in 2010.

As part of these efforts, Jeep also announced that it will produce the 2012 Jeep Wrangler Call of Duty: MW3 Special Edition. Available in Jeep showrooms November 2011, the new limited-edition Jeep Wrangler will be available in both two-door and four-door (Jeep Wrangler Unlimited) models.

At the 2001 Tokyo Motorshow Daimler Chrysler showcased this Jeep Willys 2 concept. The Willys 2 is as its name suggests the second Willys concept, and it continues on the lines set out by the award winning Willys concept. Launched at the 2001 Detroit Motorshow. The ultra-modern interpretation of trademark Jeep design cues, including the seven-slot grille and trapezoidal wheel arches, makes Willys2 stand out at any auto show. The vehicle is finished in Action Green metallic paint.

Yet with this newest concept, the Jeep brand continues to develop products reflecting true Jeep values. A combination of honest heritage and modern technology, Willys2 sports a high-tech machined appearance while still evocative of its World War II ancestor, the Willys MB, a vehicle that quickly earned a reputation as an American hero. Although a concept vehicle with no imminent production plans, Jeep Willys2 embraces its past while looking forward toward its global future.

The carbon fibre hard top comes equipped with a roof rack featuring a full-size spare tire holder and an integrated luggage carrier, as well as bindings for multiple kinds of outdoor gear. Three auxiliary fog and search lamps emphasize the 'go-anywhere do-anything' attitude that is characteristic of the Jeep brand.

The Jeep Commander is a mid-sized SUV introduced in 2006. It was first introduced at the 2005 New York Auto Show. It is a 7-passenger SUV and is just 2 inches longer than the Jeep Grand Cherokee. It has much more boxy styling, with an upright windshield and squared-off sides. The roof is stepped for the second and third-row seats (which are mounted higher than the first-row seats), but is disguised, as on the GMC Envoy XL, by a roof rack. It also features three moonroofs.

Jeep is the third company to produce a vehicle called the Commander, after the Studebaker Commander and the Scammell Commander.

Supposedly, the Jeep Wagoneer was the Commander's initial inspiration, this may be evident as its exterior resembles the styling. Although its design is very square-like, the Commander's basic platform is based off of the third generation Grand Cherokee.

The Commander offers a base V6 engine with two optional V8s including the new Hemi:

The all-new WK Grand Cherokee debuted in 2004 for the 2005 model year. Features available for the first time in a Jeep included Quadra-Drive II four wheel drive and a rear-seat DVD player.

The design still emphasizes power and luxury, with significant work done on improving noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH). However, for the first time, Jeep also emphasized on-road performance to a similar extent as the cornerstone of its brand, off-road capability.

This newfound emphasis on on-road refinement led Jeep to replace the live-axle with leading-arms front suspension found in the ZJ and WJ, prized by off-roading Jeep fans for its ability to maintain consistent ground clearance and provide optimal wheel articulation, with a double-wishbone independent setup like that which debuted in the 2002 Liberty. An SRT-8 version of the Grand Cherokee debuted at the 2005 New York International Auto Show. Liberty CRD Limited

The Jeep Liberty (also sold as the Jeep Cherokee) is a compact SUV from DaimlerChrysler. The Liberty was introduced in 2002 with styling inspired by the Dakar and Jeepster show cars. It competes with the Toyota RAV4, Ford Escape, Chevrolet Equinox and Nissan Xterra. The Liberty was the first Jeep to use two new PowerTech engines: A 150 hp 2.4 L I4 and a 210 hp 3.7 L V6. Despite popular belief, the Liberty was not the first Jeep vehicle to use an independent suspension, the Jeep Wagoneer first used it in the 1960s.

4-wheel disc brakes were added for 2003. For 2005, a 2.8 L VM Motori turbodiesel engine became available in the CRD model. Although diesel engines are not familiar in the American market, Jeep reported that they sold 10,000 Liberty CRD models in the first calendar year of sales. Only available is 2005 and 2006, the CRD has since been cancelled because its diesel engine couldn't meet upcoming emissions regulations.

The Liberty has been very successful for Jeep, outselling the Ford Escape in 2005 to become the best-selling compact SUV in the United States. 70 percent of Liberty buyers are new to the Jeep marque, and the Toledo North Assembly factory in Toledo, Ohio is running overtime to produce the model.

The Liberty was nominated for the North American Truck of the Year award for 2002.

With the arrival of the new Jeep compact SUVs Compass and Patriot for 2007, a 2008 Liberty is expected to grow considerably and become a mid-size crossover SUV, with competitors such as the Toyota Highlander, Nissan Murano and Honda Pilot.

In August of 2006, the Chrysler Group announced they were recalling 832,000 Liberty SUVs due to problems with the front suspension lower ball joint. The problem, which affected 2002-2006 models, could potentially cause a loss of steering. Chrysler previously recalled 300,000 Liberty models in 2003 because of a similar problem.

Hurricane Concept

The Jeep Hurricane is a concept vehicle that was unveiled at the 2005 North American International Auto Show in Detroit by the manufacturer Daimler-Chrysler

Climbing Ability
The Hurricane has a ground clearance of 14.3 inches (360 mm). Combined with 20-inch wide wheels holding 37-inch tall tires that are specially designed for off-roading, the Hurricane can approach and climb a 64.0 degree angle. It can also descend and depart an 86.7 degree angle. Its 20-inch, four-wheel independent short/long-arm suspension system is dampened by coilover shocks with remote reservoirs, which allows for longer travels in the shock. This helps the Hurricane to ascend and regress down almost any natural surface.

Powertrains
The Hurricane is powered by two 5.7-liter Hemi engines, one above the front axle and one above the rear axle. Each engine produces 335 horsepower (250 kW) and 370 lbf·ft (500 N·m) of torque for a total power output of 670 horsepower (500 kW) and 740 lbf·ft (1000 N·m) of torque. These figures help to accelerate the Hurricane from 0 to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds.

One feature of the Hurricane's engine system is the ability to use different sets of cylinders for different driving conditions. Each engine contains eight cylinders, but the multi-displacement system can use all, half, or none of the cylinders of each engine. For example, all sixteen cylinders can be utilized for rough terrain, twelve can be used for charging along off-road trails, eight can be used for city driving, and four can be used for highway conditions. This feature can be manipulated manually or done automatically.

The Hurricane contains a mechanically controlled four-wheel torque-distribution system, where each wheel has its own driveshaft rather than having one central driveshaft. This system delivers power to the car’s solid split axles through a central transfer case. In other powerful vehicles, the rotation of their central drive shafts applies downforce to one side of the car and upforce to the other. However, the Hurricane's split-axle design applies a downward force on each wheel individually, giving it great traction under acceleration. This prevents the frame from twisting and the wheels from lifting off the ground.

Steering
Another interesting feature of the Hurricane is the four-wheel independent steering system. Each of the Hurricane’s four wheels can turn independently from one another, allowing for three steering modes. The first mode is standard steering, where the rear wheels turn in the opposite direction of the front wheels. This tightens the turning radius and allows for more accurate steering. In the second mode, called “crab-steering”, all of the tires can be oriented in the same direction, which moves the vehicle laterally while it is still facing the same direction. The third mode makes use of the “T-Box Zero Steer” mechanism, turning all of the tires “toe-in” so that the wheels on each axle face a different direction. This means the Hurricane can actually turn in place, or spin with a turning radius of zero.

Performance
The Hurricane's one-piece body is composed largely of light-weight structural carbon fiber, which is both rigid and strong. Unlike traditional frames, the Hurricane’s body also serves as the chassis, and all of the car’s components such as the engine, transfer case, and suspension system are mounted directly to the body. Its skid plate is an aluminum spine that connects the chassis to the underside of the vehicle. The Hurricane doesn’t have side doors or a roof, and there is only seating for two people. The driver and passenger have to enter the vehicle "Dukes-of-Hazzard" style. Despite the Hurricane’s meager luxury options, it features a futuristic dashboard with polished aluminum accents named Black Thunder and Tiluminum. It also shows off Jeep’s signature seven-slot grille.

The all-new WK Grand Cherokee debuted in 2004 for the 2005 model year. Features available for the first time in a Jeep included Quadra-Drive II four wheel drive and a rear-seat DVD player.

The design still emphasizes power and luxury, with significant work done on improving noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH). However, for the first time, Jeep also emphasized on-road performance to a similar extent as the cornerstone of its brand, off-road capability.

This newfound emphasis on on-road refinement led Jeep to replace the live-axle with leading-arms front suspension found in the ZJ and WJ, prized by off-roading Jeep fans for its ability to maintain consistent ground clearance and provide optimal wheel articulation, with a double-wishbone independent setup like that which debuted in the 2002 Liberty. Jeep changed its philosophy due to what it perceived as increasing demand in the SUV marketplace for on-road performance and decreasing demand for off-road capability.

Jeep® designers have gone to the extreme once again, creating two all-new sport-utility-vehicle (SUV) concepts that could expand the Jeep brand into new territory.

The Jeep Patriot and Jeep Compass concepts are compact Jeep 4x4s that would deliver fun, freedom, utility, capability, as well as the potential for exceptional fuel economy and interior flexibility — all at a great value. Making their debut at the 2005 International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt, these concepts hint at two future compact SUVs that the Jeep brand could build for global markets as soon as next year.

With the potential for the powerful yet fuel-efficient all-new 2.4-liter World Engine and a state-of-the-art 2.0-liter diesel (for international markets), the Jeep Patriot and Jeep Compass concepts could be coupled with a new Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). All-new Jeep technology also would give these two concepts Jeep 4x4 capability.

The two very distinct interpretations of a compact Jeep complement each other, yet target different sets of customers who seek great value and fuel efficiency. The Jeep Patriot and Jeep Compass concepts would expand the brand's global lineup, which includes Jeep Commander, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Jeep Liberty (Cherokee outside North America) and the legendary Jeep Wrangler.

"The Jeep Compass and Jeep Patriot concepts prove Jeep continues to explore new territory," said Trevor Creed, Senior Vice President - Design, Chrysler Group. "These concept vehicles would allow Jeep to provide best-in-class capability to the compact SUV buyer at a great value, and do so with the credibility that only comes with a Jeep."

Jeep Patriot Concept: A Modern Interpretation of Classic Jeep Styling
Strong and capable, the Patriot concept is unmistakably Jeep, designed to appeal to compact SUV buyers who want traditional Jeep styling with best-in-class off-road capability. Jeep Patriot is rugged, exuding the brand's key attributes of mastery, authenticity, freedom and adventure, but would still offer exceptional fuel economy, interior flexibility and utility at a great value.

"Simple, geometric forms and planar surfaces define Jeep Patriot's timeless, purpose-built design," said Creed. "Patriot's face features Jeep's signature seven-slot grille, a robust bumper, round headlamps, raised, free-standing fog lamps and a visible skid plate. All of this gives Jeep Patriot its robust, strong, capable off-road image."

Painted Armour Green with black door handles, body-side moldings, black accents, dark tinted windows and a stiffer windshield, Jeep Patriot would be built for maximum cargo volume, rugged driving conditions and excellent utility. Four doors and a rear liftgate provide easy access to the Jeep Patriot concept's spacious and functional interior.

Classic Jeep design cues include aggressive 17-inch off-road wheels and tires housed inside signature Jeep trapezoidal wheel openings. These combine with a raised roof rack that can hold additional gear to provide a no-nonsense, functional statement. Jeep Patriot's higher beltline completes the vehicle's protective profile.

The rear of the vehicle features an upright backlight and a bold bumper that further illustrate the Jeep Patriot concept's interior spaciousness and add to its rugged appearance and capability.

Jeep Patriot not only looks like a Jeep, but all-new Jeep off-road technology would ensure Jeep Patriot could be a Trail Rated 4x4, which would make it the most capable vehicle in its class.

Jeep Compass Concept: A New Type of Jeep in a Contemporary Package
Sleek and sophisticated with a rally car toughness, the Jeep Compass concept would deliver Jeep fun, freedom and capability, broadening the global appeal of Jeep and attracting new buyers who might not have previously considered the brand.

"The Jeep Compass concept is an all-new kind of Jeep," Creed said. "Compact and nimble, the Jeep Compass concept is the right size for world markets and would offer performance, fuel economy and value in the highly competitive compact SUV segment."

True to Jeep's signature design cues, the Jeep Compass concept features the brand's signature seven-slot grille, round headlamps, large and capable fog lights and trapezoidal wheel openings.

A steeply raked windshield, an expressive hood, low-to-the ground stance, deep fascia, wire mesh grille texture and prominent lower intake give the Jeep Compass concept a powerful and capable appearance.
The Jeep Compass concept's side profile is highly sculptured. Powerful fender forms exaggerate the Jeep Compass concept's athletic stance, performance 19-inch wheels and red-line tires.

From the rear, a roof-mounted spoiler completes the Jeep Compass performance message. The deep fascia is uniquely styled to accommodate a large chrome dual exhaust system, which also reinforces an aggressive, performance-oriented character.

As the creator of the sport-utility vehicle segment, Jeep® continues to offer unique cars to a wide range of customers. Now the upper end of the Jeep line-up has become even stronger with the addition of a new 'Overland' diesel model.

The top-of-the-range Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland has been fitted with the remarkable five-cylinder 2.7 litre common-rail turbo diesel engine available already in 'Limited' trim. The engine, which provides 161 bhp of power and 295 lb ft of torque, is paired with a five-speed automatic transmission. Fuel consumption of the Jeep Grand Cherokee 2.7 CRD is an impressive 29.1 mpg on the combined cycle.

Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland 2.7 CRD is distinguished externally by unique machined-rim five-spoke 17-inch aluminium alloy wheels, body-colour exterior fascia panels and grille and rock rails to protect the sills. The Quadra-Drive® four-wheel drive system is standard on Overland, as is a skid plate set for optimum off-road protection.

Inside, extra equipment includes a power sunroof, 10-disc CD changer with remote control, unique suede and leather seat trim, 10-way powered and heated front seats, and real Redwood Burl wood trim on the instrument panel, centre console, upper door trims and upper part of the steering wheel.

The 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee's suspension features reduced pressure shocks for improvements in overall ride comfort. Additionally, reduced brake pedal effort allowing shorter stopping distances has been accomplished by increasing the master cylinder output pressure for a lighter brake pedal feel.

Standard multi-stage driver and passenger front air bags are designed to deploy at different levels depending on the severity of the impact. Ceiling-mounted side curtain air bags are standard fit and offer additional head protection for both front and rear passengers.

The new Jeep Grand Cherokee also offers rain-sensing front wipers. When the windscreen wiper control is turned to "AUTO", the wiper system automatically activates when it rains and adjusts its speed according to the severity of the rain.

Overland is also available with a 4.7 high-output V8 petrol engine. A 'Limited' trim level and two other petrol engines, the six cylinder 4.0 and 4.7 V8, complete the range. For 2003, Jeep Grand Cherokee is offered in two new exterior colours: Bright Silver Metallic and Brilliant Black Crystal Pearl Coat.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland 2.7 CRD costs £31,495 on-the-road. Like all Jeep vehicles, it comes with a three year, 60,000 mile warranty, roadside assistance and seven year, unlimited mile anti-corrosion guarantee.

Jeep®'s award-winning Cherokee has been improved for 2005 with a new look, updated interior and a new 2.8-litre diesel engine, with variable geometry turbo, that boasts lower emissions, more power and higher torque than the previous engine.

This common-rail diesel 2.8-litre engine replaces the 2.5-litre diesel unit across the entire Jeep Cherokee range, and uses an electronically controlled variable geometry turbocharger to improve control of boost pressure, reduce emissions and improve full load engine power and torque. Injectors on the 2.8-litre diesel have also been improved so that fuel burns more thoroughly, producing fewer particulates and lower emissions than previous generation diesel engines.

This Euro IV engine is mated to either a new six-speed manual transmission or a five-speed automatic transmission and produces 161 bhp at 3,800 rpm and 295 lb ft of torque at 1800rpm. The 0-62 mph time with the manual transmission is 12.8 seconds and 12.2 seconds for the automatic.

The new six-speed manual gearbox is also fitted as standard to the 2.4-litre petrol engine, while a 3.7-litre V6 petrol engine with five-speed automatic transmission completes the range.

The Jeep Cherokee includes a host of features including a new front grille with foglamps integrated in the grille surround together with a new front fascia, wider and more comfortable seats with improved lumbar support and rear seats that fold flatter than the previous model. Other improvements include moving the electric window switches to the centre console for better ergonomics and side-curtain airbags as standard on Limited models.

Simon Elliott, Managing Director for Chrysler Group in the UK, said: "The Cherokee has always been a big seller for Jeep in the UK -we have sold more than12,000 vehicles since 2001. Customers are often surprised just how much standard equipment you get in a Jeep, and the combination of its new rugged good looks and a 4*NCAP safety rating will all help make it an even more attractive purchase."

The Sport model, which starts the range at £17,995, is available with either the 2.4-litre or 2.8-litre engines, and features 16in steel wheels, multi-stage airbags, front fog lights, headlamp levelling, air conditioning, ABS, electric front windows and a single CD player as standard. Limited models, available with the 2.8-litre CRD or 3.7 V6 engine, come with 17in alloy wheels, jeeome front grille, side curtain airbags, cruise control and power front seats as standard.

The addition of the VGT to the 2.8-litre CRD engine has increased the mount of torque on offer by 11 per cent -266 lb ft to 295 lb ft compared to the previous engine, while the power output has increased from 148 bhp to 161 bhp. The CO2 emissions have fallen from 262 g/km to 246 g/km while the top speed stays the same at 108 mph.

The new Jeep Cherokee is available from all Chrysler UK dealers from January 2005. The commercial version of the Jeep Cherokee, the Pioneer, will also feature the 2.8-litre engine and is available with either a six speed manual gearbox or five-speed automatic transmission.

Wrangler Unlimited

The Wrangler is a mini SUV from Jeep. It is a successor to the famous World War II GP vehicle by way of the 'Willy's' Jeep in the 1950s and later by the Jeep CJ series. The Wrangler debuted in 1987, was updated in 1997, and is still popular today.

The Wrangler is produced at Jeep's Toledo South Assembly plant in Toledo, Ohio.

TJ
The YJ gave way to the TJ for the 1997 model year. This updated Wrangler featured a coil-spring suspension (based on that of the Jeep Grand Cherokee) for better ride and handling, and a return to the CJ's iconic round headlamps. The engine is the same 4.0 L AMC Straight-6 used in the Cherokee and Grand Cherokee. A 2.5 L AMC Inline-4 motor was available on entry-level models until 2003 when the 2.4 L DOHC Neon 4-cylinder engine replaced it. This model of the Jeep was the first Wrangler to have airbags.

Other changes included the 1999 additions of a larger standard fuel tank, child seat tethers and sound system improvements in 2000, and intermittent wipers, a new console, and an optional locking compartment for 2001.

TJ Wrangler Rubicon
The Wrangler Rubicon (named for the famed Rubicon Trail off-road test circuit) was introduced in 2003. It features front and rear Dana 44 axles with built-in air-actuated locking differentials, rear helical gear-driven limited slip differential, 4:1 low-range NV241 transfer case, 4.10:1 differential gears, 16 in alloy wheels, and Goodyear MTR P245×75×R16 tires. 2003 and 2004 featured the NV3550 manual transmission in the Rubicon while 2005 changed to a six speed. The 42RLE four-speed automatic transmission was available from 2003 to 2005.

A limited run of 1,000 Wrangler Rubicon "Tomb Raider" models were produced in 2003 to promote the Tomb Raider sequel, Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life. Along with the standard Rubicon fare, it also included exterior features such as 16 in. Alcoa forged aluminum wheels, Tomb Raider badging, and Mopar accessories including a light bar, riveted fender flares, tubular grille guard, diamond-plated bumper guard, etc. Interior features included Dark Slate fabric seats with red accent stitching down the center, silver surround instrument panel bezel, red seatbelts and a Tomb Raider badge with serial number. To match the vehicle in the film, it was offered in Bright Silver.

TJ Wrangler Unlimited
In 2004, Jeep introduced the Wrangler Unlimited with a 10 in (~25.4 cm) longer wheelbase, a Dana 44 rear axle with a 3:73 gear ratio and the Command-Trac 231 transfer case; this model is also known by its unofficial designation of LJ. In 2005, Jeep released the Rubicon Unlimited, which has the wheelbase of the Unlimited and the off-road features of the Rubicon such as front and rear Dana 44 axles with locking differentials, diamond plate rocker guards, a NVG241OR transfer case with a 4.0:1 low range, 245/75R16 Goodyear MT/R tires, a six-speed manual transmission and other comfort and convenience options not offered on other Wranglers.

Jeep® has shown it is still a favourite with the 4x4 experts after picking up yet another top off-roading award.

The rugged Jeep Cherokee, which is winning fans by the day, has been voted top choice in the "Best Mid Size" class of 4x4 magazine's 4x4 of the Year 2003 event. The car was described by the magazine judges as "positive" and "a winner every time".

Describing the Cherokee, John Carroll, Editor of 4x4 said: "Whether you're going to take your car off road or stay on the well beaten track there are few more positive, encouraging mid-size 4x4s out there. It's great at the wheel, and the auto gearbox is one of the best I've driven for the price. A winner every time."

It has been a good year so far for the popular Cherokee. In June a special edition Extreme Sport version was launched in 3.7 litre petrol (£20,880) and 2.8 litre CRD (£21,880) form. Nearly 40,000 Cherokee models have now been sold in the UK since its 1993 introduction.

Building on the success of three special-edition Wrangler vehicles produced in 2010, the Jeep® brand is introducing its latest Wrangler model: the new 2011 Jeep Wrangler Mojave.

Paying tribute to the well-known and rugged western desert Mojave Trail, Jeep Wrangler Mojave features a unique desert theme inside and out, and an aggressive wheel and tire package to tackle the toughest terrain.

"The Mojave Trail is known for expeditions, exploration and a rugged environment that features elevation, sand, canyons, a river crossing and hill climbs - the perfect landscape for the Jeep Wrangler," said Mike Manley, President and CEO — Jeep Brand, Chrysler Group LLC. Spanning 138 miles, the Mojave Trail begins near Laughlin, Nev., and travels to Afton Canyon near Barstow, Calif.

Available in Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited models, the 2011 Wrangler Mojave arrives in Jeep showrooms in June 2011.

Based on the Wrangler Sport model, the Mojave's unique desert theme conveys off-road Wrangler fun. Exterior features include a body-color hardtop and fender flares, "Mojave" and lizard decals on the hood and rear, and the Sahara model's side steps. Jeep Wrangler Mojave also offers an aggressive Wrangler Rubicon tire and wheel package, with mineral gray 17-inch wheels shod with 32-inch tires. Finishing touches on the exterior include a black fuel filler door and taillamp guards.

Inside, Jeep Wrangler Mojave's seats are dark saddle leather with a lizard logo embossed on the front seats. Unique driftwood surrounds the vents, front-passenger grab handle, steering-wheel spokes and door-handle inserts. Mopar® tread pattern slush mats and overhead grab handles complete the Mojave package.

The new 2011 Jeep Wrangler Mojave is available in Sahara Tan, Bright White and Black.

Jeep continues to refine the successful Wrangler formula by combining legendary, benchmark capability with an all-new interior that delivers rich styling with significantly upgraded touch surfaces, occupant comfort and versatility, and a premium appearance courtesy of an all-new body color hard top for the popular Sahara model.

New 2011 Jeep Wrangler interior highlights include a redesigned instrument panel and new storage areas with improved ergonomics and upgraded materials. The Jeep Liberty (also sold as the Jeep Cherokee) is a compact SUV from DaimlerChrysler. The Liberty was introduced in 2002 with styling inspired by the Dakar and Jeepster show cars. It competes with the Toyota RAV4, Ford Escape, Chevrolet Equinox and Nissan Xterra. The Liberty was the first Jeep to use two new PowerTech engines: A 150 hp 2.4 L I4 and a 210 hp 3.7 L V6. Despite popular belief, the Liberty was not the first Jeep vehicle to use an independent suspension, the Jeep Wagoneer first used it in the 1960s.

4-wheel disc brakes were added for 2003. For 2005, a 2.8 L VM Motori turbodiesel engine became available in the CRD model. Although diesel engines are not familiar in the American market, Jeep reported that they sold 10,000 Liberty CRD models in the first calendar year of sales. Only available is 2005 and 2006, the CRD has since been cancelled because its diesel engine couldn't meet upcoming emissions regulations.

The Liberty has been very successful for Jeep, outselling the Ford Escape in 2005 to become the best-selling compact SUV in the United States. 70 percent of Liberty buyers are new to the Jeep marque, and the Toledo North Assembly factory in Toledo, Ohio is running overtime to produce the model.

The Liberty was nominated for the North American Truck of the Year award for 2002.

With the arrival of the new Jeep compact SUVs Compass and Patriot for 2007, a 2008 Liberty is expected to grow considerably and become a mid-size crossover SUV, with competitors such as the Toyota Highlander, Nissan Murano and Honda Pilot.

In August of 2006, the Chrysler Group announced they were recalling 832,000 Liberty SUVs due to problems with the front suspension lower ball joint. The problem, which affected 2002-2006 models, could potentially cause a loss of steering. Chrysler previously recalled 300,000 Liberty models in 2003 because of a similar problem.

When it appeared in dealers' showrooms in the summer of 1946, the Jeep Station Wagon was an immediate hit. Not only was it one of the first all-new postwar vehicles to be produced, it was attractive, affordable, and perhaps most importantly, utilitarian - a vehicle appealing to the eye and the pocketbook, yet useful for a wide variety of tasks. Its compact 104-inch wheelbase allowed it to be driven and parked almost anywhere, and yet its interior provided seating for seven, with all but the driver's seat made removable for cargo-hauling. In fact, with the rear seats removed, 96 cubic feet of cargo capacity became available, and the 50-inch interior height permitted transportation of especially tall items, something unthinkable in most cars of the era. For the first time the station wagon, previously considered by many a near-luxury vehicle, was being produced as a striking, low-cost family car - and quickly accepted.

The Jeep Station Wagon was also ruggedly dependable. Roos had provided a front suspension that resembled the "planar" suspension he developed for Studebaker in the Thirties; it utilized a seven-leaf transverse spring rather than conventional coil springs. The powertrain featured the Willys four-cylinder "Go-Devil" engine, augmented in the 1948 model year by a Roos-designed six-cylinder "Lightning" engine. Even more significant was the introduction of four-wheel drive models in 1949, beginning an association of that technology and cargo-carrying passenger vehicles that has been a hallmark of the Jeep brand ever since.

Correctly described as "One of the most influential automobiles ever built," the Jeep Station Wagon was produced through the early 1960s, then succeeded by the Jeep Wagoneer and subsequent Jeep sport-utility vehicles. Each of these Jeep vehicles has elevated the sport-utility concept to a higher level of comfort, performance and utility. But they all owe their success to the design of the slab-sided Jeep Station Wagon, first sketched by Brooks Stevens on a winter day in Toledo more than sixty years ago.

Jeep Grand Cherokee, built specifically for the UK market at Graz in Austria, successfully marries the most cosseting luxury car comfort, ride and performance, to rugged go-anywhere ability in even the most hostile terrain, entirely in keeping with the robust Jeep legend.

The flagship of the Chrysler brand, Grand Cherokee is a classic American design, entirely in keeping with the Chrysler marque strengths of innovation, and individuality, a car that exudes passion and styling flair, laying down a new benchmark to which 4x4 pretenders can only aspire.

ALL NEW INSIDE AND OUT

New Jeep Grand Cherokee is the first Jeep vehicle developed and engineered using cutting-edge CATIA (Computer Aided Three-Dimensional Interactive Application) computer design technology. For all the technological

innovation that lies under the skin though, there is no mistaking the new-shape Jeep Grand Cherokee's motif Jeep grille, less angular and more raked, unmistakably Jeep yet in keeping with the car's more fluid, refined and dynamic looks.

The instantly recognised grille is flanked by jewel-like headlamps that match stunning looks to increased efficiency. A brighter, wider beam pattern is matched to headlamp levelling, so that even when the car is heavily loaded or towing, the headlamps can be 'tuned' for optimum safety. The windscreen is steeply angled, for greater aerodynamic efficiency. To the rear, bold tri-colour tail lamps lend Jeep Grand Cherokee its distinctive on-road personality, to stand out from the crowd.

The interior has more room for occupants and luggage. By making Jeep Grand Cherokee 11 cm longer (4.4 inches), 6.4 cm higher (2.5 inches), and 4 cm wider (1.6 inches), occupants can now enjoy an extra 2.5 cm (one inch) more front headroom, 1.2 cm (half an inch) more rear head room, 7.8 cm (3.1 inches) more rear hip room and 36 litres (1.3 cubic feet) more luggage space.

There are new materials and a bold new look. The theme is elegant luxury. Soft-touch surfaces give a solid, reassuring feel. For the driver, control is total. All primary controls are to hand on stalks around the steering wheel, and key controls for the advanced audio system are integrated into the leather covered steering wheel.

There is more headroom front and rear, more hip room in the back, some 36 litres (1.2 cubic feet) more cargo volume, and with the full size spare tyre tucked away neatly under the rear cargo floor, easy-fold split rear seats and fold-down armrests open up a cavernous luggage compartment in a matter of moments.

The level of equipment is lavish right across the range. Standard specification includes the dual zone climate control system that independently controls air temperature for both sides of the cabin. There are heated front seats with 10-way power adjustment and memory settings, a 180 watt six speaker sound system and 'his' and 'hers' key fobs with full memory settings. There is also a rear screen radio aerial, flip-up hinged rear window and power, and electrically controlled, folding wing mirrors with 'his' and 'hers' memory settings. Also standard is cruise control, the programmable overhead console information centre, leather trim, tinted glass and illuminated vanity mirrors, and 17 inch alloy wheels.

For safety dual front airbags are standard, as are side impact protection guards, and anti-lock brakes. Should you want to tour your Jeep Grand Cherokee at speed abroad, unique tyres designed specifically with high speed motoring in mind allow a top cruising speed of 125 mph, which guarantees superior handling and ultra-short braking distances.

Such attention to detail, a Chrysler design trade mark, can be further seen with air foil windscreen wipers that ensure clear vision during high speed motorway driving, and the tuning of the steering gear and suspension specifically for confidence-inspiring handling at motorway speeds.

POWER PLAY

Jeep Grand Cherokee is now powered by two all-new engines and a thoroughly reworked, more powerful, version of the much-loved 4.0-litre straight six petrol powerplant. The muscular all-new 4.7-litre V8 PowerTech engine, new 3.1-litre five cylinder Turbo diesel and the 4.0-litre straight six petrol engines have been designed specifically to offer better performance, improved fuel consumption, better quality and reliability, and to be quieter and smoother for a more sophisticated and relaxing ride.

David Van Raaphorst, of Jeep Product Planning, says: "We designed these new engines so as to maximise fuel efficiency and to minimise emissions, while setting new standards for performance and refinement.

"For the V8 it meant more usable power, less noise, reduced vibration and less harshness, and greater durability. We have made this V8 one of the most quiet, refined and best sounding petrol powerplants Chrysler has ever developed. This has been done by increasing engine and overall powertrain stiffness, improving the balance of rotating components and upgrading the powertrain mounting systems.

"Engine efficiencies were key goals in the development process. With the extensive use of alternative materials, plus our ability to optimise the air flow by using computer simulations, we have engines that produce more power, use less fuel, and burn cleaner.

"For the Turbo Diesel it meant that we added a cylinder and increased the displacement to meet the demand for added performance."

4.7-LITRE V8

The 4.7-litre V8, offers more usable power, greater torque for improved pulling power and greater durability. It takes Jeep Grand Cherokee to a top speed of 124 mph and from 0-60 mph in eight seconds. The V8 PowerTech engine delivers 220 bhp at 4600 rpm and 291 lb ft of torque at 3300 rpm. Vibration is at a minimum thanks to the use of stiffer structures and moving parts, and by reducing noise from inside the engine. But there is still that distinctive V8 exhaust burble.

Power levels are up thanks to the fast-burn combustion technology. This has the added bonus of improving fuel economy by getting more work from any given amount of fuel, aided by a computer-designed water pump that reduces wasted power. As a result, despite its 4.7 litres, the V8 is capable of 20.8 mpg.

3.1-LITRE TURBO DIESEL

With a third of Jeep Grand Cherokee sales in Europe featuring diesel powerplants, the all-new 3.1-litre Turbo Diesel engine, is a significant option for drivers keen to use the massive pulling power of a diesel unit for the toughest off-road jobs such as towing trailers, caravans and horseboxes. The 3.1 TD, built at VM Motors in Cento, Italy, is the first ever diesel-engined Jeep to be fitted with an automatic transmission as standard, and can tow loads of up to 3500 kg.

The beefy five cylinder 3125 cc Turbo Diesel is smoothly responsive, marrying power, economy and civilised on-road use, to storming off-road capability thanks to its massive 283 lb ft of torque, and a power rating of 138 bhp at 3600 rpm.

None of which does anything to diminish the diesel's forecourt-shy economy. Driving more than 700 miles on a tank of fuel is a feat for any car. But the Turbo Diesel Jeep Grand Cherokee will do just that. This is no idle marketing boast, as a 3.1-litre Turbo Diesel travelled all the way from Dover to the North East of Scotland on just one tank of fuel, averaging a miserly 43 mpg, and covering 735 miles (1,176 kilometres) on 78 litres. That works out at an average 42.86 mpg or 6.63 l/100 km. Official economy figures show the Turbo Diesel returns 29.1 mpg extra urban, 24.1 mpg combined, and 19.5 mpg urban cycle.

To minimise noise and vibration, the diesel engine, transmission and transfer case include a set of interconnecting steel struts similar to those used in the 4.0-litre petrol engine. These struts increase the natural vibration frequency of the assembly, which removes a source of annoying vibration. The vibration is further reduced thanks to a new direct-mount air conditioning compressor, as well as improvements to the compact alternator and power steering brackets. A single serpentine belt with automatic tensioner drives all the engine-mounted accessories, which reduces peak bearing loads for quieter operation.

Steve Gray, General Manager Marketing for Chrysler and Jeep says: "Now it is possible to have all of the benefits of the diesel engine with the sophistication and ease of operation of automatic transmission."

4.0-LITRE STRAIGHT SIX PETROL

The 4.0-litre straight six petrol engine has been extensively revised, and as a result is 10 per cent more powerful, delivering 188 bhp at 5000 rpm, 218 lb ft of torque at 3050 rpm, with a top speed of 117 mph and a 0-60 mph time of 10 seconds, returning 23.5 mpg on the extra urban cycle.

Upgrades to the 4.0-litre powerplant make it quieter, but at the same time more powerful and environmentally cleaner. A new splitter-vane water pump is 50 per cent more efficient, and a new cylinder head with reduced-area exhaust ports and new exhaust manifolds expel spent combustion products more efficiently, which also increases power. A lower idle speed helps improve fuel economy.

So that the 4.0-litre Jeep Grand Cherokee is quieter and more relaxing to drive, Chrysler Jeep engineers have worked hard to reduce noise and vibration from the engine, transmission and transfer with a set of steel struts used to interconnect all three. The result is markedly less noise, vibration and harshness perceived by the car's occupants.

ELECTRONIC AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

The fully automatic, electronically controlled multi-speed 45RFE is all-new for the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.7-litre V8. Another breakthrough comes in the shape of the automatic transmission with the 3.1-litre Turbo Diesel, making it the Jeep with a diesel engine matched to automatic transmission.

The 45RFE automatic transmission and V8 engine have been designed and engineered in harmony and precisely calibrated to bring the best out of one another. The result is a highly sophisticated engine/transmission powertrain that delivers huge amounts of power in a refined, easy-to-use flow, a partnership that also results in improved fuel efficiency and greatly reduced exhaust emissions.

David Van Raaphorst of Chrysler Jeep Product Planning says: "Incorporating optimised gear ratio steps and state-of-the-art features, the 45RFE represents a new level for shift refinement, noise, vibration and harshness characteristics and durability."

The 45RFE Automatic transmission also clearly establishes Jeep Grand Cherokee as a class leader as it is the only 4x4 in its class with the advantage of a reverse gear ratio that is equal to the first gear ratio. For 4x4 drivers, especially the motorist who tows or is used to carrying heavy loads, this is a particularly useful feature.

The 45RFE also has the widest range of gear ratios in any transmission in its class. The innovative design means that, together with the precise step selections, gear shifts with the enormously powerful V8 are silken smooth, while also ensuring that maximum power and keenest fuel economy are maintained no matter what the conditions.

The whole Jeep Grand Cherokee range comes with automatic transmission. The 3.1-litre Turbo Diesel is partnered with a thoroughly re-engineered version of the 44RE electronically controlled four-speed transmission, while the 4.0-litre straight six petrol unit is mated to the proven, totally updated, electronically controlled four-speed 42RE automatic transmission.

4x4 THE QUADRA-DRIVE WAY

Chrysler's all-new Quadra-Drive four-wheel drive system is an industry exclusive for Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Quadra-Drive combines, for the first time, the proven Quadra-Trac ll transfer case with the Vari-Lok progressive front and rear axle differentials. The combined Quadra-Drive system is a new concept in 4x4, delivering class-leading levels of responsiveness and traction on and off road, whatever the conditions, the weather or the terrain, all of it done instantly and automatically, without the driver having to endlessly push buttons or fiddle with levers.

Under normal motoring conditions, all Jeep Grand Cherokees have most of their engine power delivered just to the rear wheels. If the system detects any loss of grip, power is also instantly sent to the front axle, giving back to the driver total control and enhanced traction.

The instant a wheel loses traction, the speed variation between the front and rear axle causes a gerotor pump to apply hydraulic pressure to a multi-disc clutch-plate. This in turn sends power to the front axle. Within fractions of a second, traction and control is seamlessly transferred allowing Grand Cherokee to continue on its way without fuss or worry. The Jeep Grand Cherokee driver may not even notice the gerotor pump doing its job, except for the car's serene and untroubled progress. In another industry breakthrough, the response of the gerotor pump can be tuned to match driving conditions precisely so that the advanced system can be used in the front axle as well as the rear.

The Vari-Lok technology guarantees power is delivered to the wheel with the most grip. This keeps Jeep Grand Cherokee on the move at all times. The beauty of Vari-Lok is that it can deliver far more torque to the wheel that is getting the most grip, than can conventional limited-slip systems. This is because power transfer in a Vari-Lok differential is proportional to wheel speed difference rather than torque difference as is the case with most mechanical limited-slip systems.

The result is a system that is especially effective on surfaces where opposite wheels find themselves on surfaces with very different friction and traction characteristics. Where one wheel is on tarmac and the other on wet grass, or one wheel on ice and the other on track, Vari-Lok comes into its own.

The result is improved handling and stability in wet weather, on slippery roads, in ice, or in rain. As well as getting the maximum possible traction when accelerating, Quadra-Trac ll includes a low range for highly effective off-road operation.

The first civilian Jeep vehicle, the CJ-2A, was produced in 1945. Willys advertisements marketed the Jeep as a work vehicle for farmers and construction workers. It came with a tailgate, side-mounted spare tire, larger headlights, an external fuel cap and many more items that its military predecessors did not include.

The CJ-2A was produced for four years, and in 1948 the CJ-3A was introduced. It was very similar to the previous model but featured a one-piece windscreen, and retained the original L-head four-cylinder engine.

With modifications and improvements, the Willys Quad became the MA, and later the MB. But the Army, and the world, came to know it as the Jeep®.

Some claimed that the name came from the slurring of the letters "GP," the military abbreviation for "General Purpose." Others say the vehicle was named for a popular character named "Eugene the Jeep" in the Popeye cartoon strip. Whatever its origin, the name entered into the American lexicon and, for awhile, served almost as a generic title for off-road vehicles, while the Jeep itself became an icon of the war.

The Willys MA featured a gearshift on the steering column, low side body cutouts, two circular instrument clusters on the dashboard, and a hand brake on the left side. Willys struggled to reduce the weight to the new Army specification of 2,160 lbs. Items removed in order for the MA to reach that goal were reinstalled on the next-generation MB resulting in a final weight of approximately just 400 lbs. above the specifications.

Willys-Overland would build more than 368,000 vehicles, and Ford, under license, some 277,000, for the U.S. Army. The rugged, reliable olive-drab vehicle would forever be known for helping win a world war.

Willys trademarked the "Jeep" name after the war and planned to turn the vehicle into an off-road utility vehicle for the farm - the civilian Universal Jeep. One of Willys' slogans at the time was "The Sun Never Sets on the Mighty Jeep," and the company set about making sure the world recognized Willys as the creator of the vehicle.

With modifications and improvements, the Willys Quad became the MA, and later the MB. But the Army, and the world, came to know it as the Jeep®.

Some claimed that the name came from the slurring of the letters "GP," the military abbreviation for "General Purpose." Others say the vehicle was named for a popular character named "Eugene the Jeep" in the Popeye cartoon strip. Whatever its origin, the name entered into the American lexicon and, for awhile, served almost as a generic title for off-road vehicles, while the Jeep itself became an icon of the war.

The Willys MA featured a gearshift on the steering column, low side body cutouts, two circular instrument clusters on the dashboard, and a hand brake on the left side. Willys struggled to reduce the weight to the new Army specification of 2,160 lbs. Items removed in order for the MA to reach that goal were reinstalled on the next-generation MB resulting in a final weight of approximately just 400 lbs. above the specifications.

Willys-Overland would build more than 368,000 vehicles, and Ford, under license, some 277,000, for the U.S. Army. The rugged, reliable olive-drab vehicle would forever be known for helping win a world war.

Willys trademarked the "Jeep" name after the war and planned to turn the vehicle into an off-road utility vehicle for the farm - the civilian Universal Jeep. One of Willys' slogans at the time was "The Sun Never Sets on the Mighty Jeep," and the company set about making sure the world recognized Willys as the creator of the vehicle.

At first, Willys-Overland and American Bantam Car Manufacturing Company were the only two companies answering the call. Soon, however, Ford Motor Company entered the picture, and competition began among the three over which company would receive the lucrative government contract.

Each company produced prototypes for testing in record time. Bantam's chief engineer, along with a team of Bantam executives, worked out a design, and the company built its field car within 49 days.

Willys-Overland Vice President of Engineering Delmar G. Roos designed the Willys Quad. Ford developed its Model GP (General Purpose), known as the Pygmy, which was powered by an adapted Ford/Ferguson tractor. Each company delivered its prototype to the Army in the summer of 1940 and received approval to build 70 sample vehicles.

The Army took possession of these vehicles in November 1940 at Camp Holabird, Md. Each of the three designs exceeded the Army's specification of 1,300 lbs., but the Army soon realized that limit was far too low and raised it for the next round of vehicles.

The Army issued the next round of contracts in March of 1941. Bantam was to produce 1,500 Model 40 BRC vehicles, Ford would build 1,500 modified and improved GP Pygmies, and Willys would build 1,500 Quads. Further testing and evaluation led to the Army's selection of the Willys vehicle as the standard.

Subsequently, most of the Bantams and Ford GPs produced were sent to Great Britain and Russia as part of the lend-lease program. In Great Britain, the Ford vehicle was popularly known as the "Blitz Buggy."

With modifications and improvements, the Willys Quad became the MA, and later the MB. But the Army, and the world, came to know it as the Jeep®.

Jeep announced that it will produce a limited-edition 2011 Jeep Wrangler Call of Duty: Black Ops Edition. The new limited-edition Jeep Wrangler will be available at a U.S. manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) of $30,625 for the two-door model and $33,500 for the four-door (Jeep Wrangler Unlimited) model. Both prices include $750 destination.

The 2011 Jeep Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited Call of Duty: Black Ops Edition is based on the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon model and features dark Rubicon wheels in a high-gloss Mineral Gray. The vehicle's exterior color is black and features Call of Duty: Black Ops graphics on the roof and front quarter panels. The vehicle also features taillamp guards and a fuel-filler door from Mopar®. Inspired by Call of Duty: Black Ops, the new limited-edition Wrangler delivers legendary Jeep capability, aggressive 32-inch off-road tires, live axles with locking differentials in the front and rear, and a two-speed transfer case.

The partnership delivers a natural fit including an in-game integration into both the epic single player storyline of Call of Duty: Black Ops and the title's much anticipated multiplayer experience.

Jeep continues to refine the successful Wrangler formula by combining legendary, benchmark capability with an all-new interior that delivers rich styling with significantly upgraded touch surfaces, occupant comfort and versatility, and a premium appearance courtesy of an all-new body color hard top for the popular Sahara model.

New 2011 Jeep Wrangler interior highlights include a redesigned instrument panel and new storage areas with improved ergonomics and upgraded materials. A new lockable console and upgraded door armrest areas boast comfortable touch points, while a redesigned center stack is easier to reach and operate. The Jeep EV development vehicle is a Range-extended Electric Vehicle that provides a glimpse into the future of a "Go Anywhere, Do Anything" vehicle with renowned Jeep Wrangler capability.

The Jeep EV combines Wrangler's unmatched off-road capability with the ultimate "Tread Lightly" mindset by providing nature ambassadors with the ability to roam the planet and take care of it at the same time.

The Jeep EV Range-extended Electric Vehicle uses an electric motor, an advanced lithium-ion battery system, and a small gasoline engine with an integrated electric generator to produce additional energy to power the electric-drive system when needed. The 200 kW (268 horsepower) electric motor generates 400 N•m (295 lb.-ft.) of torque. With approximately eight gallons of gasoline, the Jeep EV has a range of 400 miles, including 40 miles of zero fuel-consumption, zero-emissions, all-electric operation.

"We are also exploring four-wheel-drive, in-wheel electric motors to demonstrate the full reach of ENVI's advanced electric-drive technologies," said Rhodes.

The all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee offers the new Quadra-Lift air suspension system. The Quadra-Lift system features five height settings for optimum ride performance:

* Normal Ride Height (NRH): 8.1 inches of clearance offers improved fuel economy and improved aerodynamics during on-road driving
* Off-road 1: Lifts the vehicle an additional 1.5 inches for added height in clearing obstacles (9.6 inches)
* Off-road 2: Delivers legendary Jeep off-road capability and provides an additional 3 inches of height for 11.1 inches of ground clearance
* Park Mode: Lowers the vehicle 1.5 inches from NRH for easy ingress/egress. NRH and Park mode are driver-selectable giving the driver control over vehicle ride height

Quadra-Lift adds up to 4.5 inches of lift span that is supported by four-corner air springs that provide a cushioned, premium ride. Quadra-Lift operates automatically, or may be controlled manually via console controls.

In addition to the Quadra-Lift air suspension, the all-new Selec-Terrain™ traction control system lets customers choose the off-road setting for the optimum experience on all terrains. With the front air dam removed, and the available Quadra-Lift air suspension, the all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee features a 35.9-degree approach angle, (compared to 32.3 on current model), a 29.2-degree departure angle (compared to 27.5 on current model) and 25.1-degree breakover angle (compared to 20.4 on current model).

The all-new independent front and rear suspension features isolated front and rear suspension cradles. Variable-rate rear springs deliver improved on-road handling and comfort that complements the vehicle's off-road capability. The new rear suspension allows the spare tire to be stored inside the vehicle as opposed to underneath.

Go-Anywhere 4x4 Systems
The 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee offers three 4x4 systems (Quadra-Trac I®, Quadra-Trac II® and Quadra-Drive® II).

Quadra Trac I delivers full-time four-wheel drive without any switches or levers to pull. The system provides smooth operation over a variety of road conditions. This light-weight single-speed case is both proven and highly efficient for enhanced fuel economy.

Quadra Trac II's two-speed transfer case uses input from a variety of sensors in order to determine tire slip at the earliest possible moment and take corrective action. The system uses Throttle Anticipate to sense quick movement in the throttle from a stop and maximizes traction before slippage occurs. When tire slippage is detected, as much as 100 percent of available torque is instantly routed to the axle with the most traction.

Quadra Drive II, with a rear Electronic Limited-Slip Differential (ELSD), delivers industry-leading tractive capability. The system instantly detects tire slip and smoothly distributes engine torque to tires with traction. In some cases, the vehicle will anticipate low traction and adjust in order to proactively limit or eliminate slip.

Selec-Terrain is standard with Quadra Trac II and Quadra Drive II.

Jeep Trail Rated®
All 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokees equipped with either the off-road or the Quadra-Lift group are Trail Rated®. The Jeep Trail Rated badge on the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee indicates that the vehicle has been designed to perform in a variety of challenging off-road conditions identified by five key consumer-oriented performance categories: traction, ground clearance, maneuverability, articulation and water fording.

Jeep Trail Rated is a unique methodology used by Jeep Engineering to measure and predict off-road performance for all Jeep vehicles. Through a combination of natural and controlled field tests, Jeep Trail Rated provides a consistent measurement of off-road performance for all Jeep vehicles. Only Jeep vehicles are Trail Rated.

Powertrains
The all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee is available with two leading engine options for North American markets.

The 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee's standard engine is an all-new flexible fuel 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine. The 3.6-liter V-6 engine is an all-new design featuring double overhead camshafts (DOHC) and a high-pressure die-cast aluminum cylinder block in a 60-degree configuration. It features Variable-Valve Timing (VVT) and delivers 280 horsepower (209 kW) and 260 lb.-ft. of torque (353 N•m) @ 4,800 rpm. This all-new Pentastar V-6 engine improves fuel economy up to 11 percent compared to the previous Jeep Grand Cherokee equipped with a V-6. It is coupled with the proven W5A580, a five-speed automatic transmission that delivers smooth shifts and optimum fuel economy. The five-speed W5A580 transmission includes adaptive electronic control or Electronic Range Select (ERS) driver-interactive manual control and an electronically modulated torque converter clutch.

The all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee's larger fuel tank, with a 24.6 gallon capacity, combined with the Pentastar V-6 engine's improved fuel economy, delivers a range of approximately 500 miles on one tank of gas.

The available legendary 5.7-liter HEMI® V-8 engine delivers 360 horsepower (268 kW) and 390 lb.-ft. of torque (520 N•m) @ 4,250 rpm. The HEMI also features VVT, which delivers performance and towing capability, as well as fuel efficiency with the fuel-saving Multi-displacement System (MDS). The 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine is mated to the 545RFE multi-speed automatic transmission.

The all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee offers unsurpassed trailer tow capability of up to 7,400 lbs. on 4x2 models when equipped with the HEMI V-8 engine.

For international markets, the all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee will be available in left- and right-hand drive with either diesel or petrol powertrains.

World-class Interior Refinement
The all-new interior is elevated to that of its European competition and features rich materials and elegant appointments, as well as more room for both passengers and cargo.

"Following in the footsteps of our all-new 2009 Dodge Ram, our all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee is another proud graduate of our Advanced Interior Design Studio," said Ralph Gilles, Vice President - Design. "We achieved a world-class interior by using fine materials and maintaining a laser-attention to details."

An available all-new CommandView® dual-pane sun roof provides twice as much glass surface than a standard sun roof and extends from the windshield to the rear of the vehicle. The front panel can be opened rearward, providing additional light and fresh air to first-row passengers. The rear panel, which is fixed, allows light and open viewing for second-row passengers and comes standard with a power sun shade.

Right-sized Packaging
The vehicle's 114.8-inch wheelbase is 5.3 inches longer than the model it replaces and contributes to an overall vehicle length that is 1.8 inches longer than the prior model. The longer wheelbase creates more interior room and gives passengers an additional 4 inches of rear-seat knee and leg room. The vehicle also is 3 inches wider for improved handling and packaging.

Larger front door openings (1.9 inches wider; 2 inches higher) and rear doors open 78 degrees compared to current models (67 degrees) for better access to the interior.

Inside, premium seating includes room for five passengers. An available fold-flat front-passenger seat provides improved cargo storage room (Laredo models).

For added passenger comfort, rear seats recline 12 degrees. There also is a 12-degree forward angle to allow 24 degrees of variation.

Cargo volume behind the second-row provides an additional 6.8 cubic feet of room (36.3 cubic feet total) compared to the previous model. The well-appointed rear cargo area includes a storage unit with a rechargeable flashlight and new and improved grocery hooks on both sides. The spare tire compartment includes removable dual storage bins for secure storage of muddy gear or other items.

An all-new power rear liftgate is available for effortless remote up/down convenience.

Classic Exterior Design
Every surface of the all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee is new and treated for aerodynamics. This improves fuel efficiency and puts more fluidity into the design while delivering a 7- percent improvement in drag compared with the current model. The all-new 2011 Grand Cherokee Cd is approximately 0.37 compared with the 2009 Cd of 0.404.

"Our all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee is much more refined, focused and sportier than the model it replaces," said Gilles. "It has classic Jeep Grand Cherokee styling with sculpted athletic exterior refinements for 2011."

The front includes Jeep's classic seven-slot grille, round headlamps and trapezoidal wheel arches. The removable lower front fascia delivers improved fuel economy, on-road performance and off-road capability. The lower front fascia features a large chromed appliqué (Limited and Overland models) that showcases available tow hooks.

From the side, Jeep Grand Cherokee features an athletic, muscular profile. Black appliqués on B-pillars give the day-light opening (DLO) an aerodynamic, modern appearance and a sleek profile. Available chromed mirrors and door handles add to the profile and complement the full-chromed DLO surround on all models.

Seventeen-inch wheels are standard and deliver off-road capability, with optional 18-inch and all-new to Jeep, 20-inch wheels for 2011.

Taillamps wrap from the rear quarter panel to the back of the vehicle and create a solid form which achieves more of an upscale appearance. The treatment complements the front-end design and resonates with the rest of the exterior.

Jeep Grand Cherokee models equipped with a HEMI V-8 engine have 3.5-inch dual chromed exhaust tips, and those with the Pentastar V-6 engine have a 3-inch single exhaust.

Premium Performance
Continuing to build on the Jeep brand's legendary off-road capability, the all-new 2011 Grand Cherokee adds premium on-road performance to complete the package.

The all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee's premium SUV on-road manners and legendary Jeep ruggedness is achieved with more than 5,400 welds in the body alone. Torsional stiffness is 146 percent more than the current Grand Cherokee and stiffer than the BMW X5 and Toyota Highlander for improved durability and reduced noise, vibration and harshness (NVH).

With more than 3,700 mm of arc welding and 100 m of structural adhesive to augment welding, this marks a 53-percent increase in spot welds, a 42-percent increase in arc welds and a 38-percent increase in structural adhesive.

More than 45 Safety and Security Features
The all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee includes more than 45 safety and security features.

Standard safety features include Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Electronic Roll Mitigation (ERM), four-wheel Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) with rough-road detection, four-wheel Brake Traction Control System (BTCS), Passive Entry/Keyless Go, Remote keyless entry, express up/down windows for driver and front-seat passenger, seat-belt pretensioners, Trailer-Sway Control and Remote-Start which is standard on Overland and available on Limited.

Other standard safety features include full-length side-curtain air bags which extend protection to front and rear outboard passengers, seat-mounted side thorax air bags that enhance protection for the driver and front passenger and active head restraints which deploy in the event of a rear collision.

The body structure is all new and designed to achieve expected safety performance in global markets (new roof-crush standards, side-impact standards and Euro pedestrian impact).

Connectivity and Infotainment Features
The all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee will feature uconnect guardian as a standard feature on all models (services provided by Hughes Telematics).

The 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee also features SIRIUS Travel Link. Giving drivers up-to-the minute information about, gas prices, weather conditions, sports scores and movie listings. In addition, the all-new 2011 Grand Cherokee features SIRIUS Traffic, which monitors traffic in 78 markets across the U.S. and continuously displays those conditions through the vehicle's nav system. Manufacturing
The all-new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee will be built at the 2.7-million-square-foot Jefferson North Assembly Plant (JNAP) in Detroit, which has been the site of Jeep Grand Cherokee production since its introduction in 1992.

In preparation for production of the all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee, Jefferson North Assembly is undergoing a 285,000-square-foot expansion to replace the existing body shop, which is part of Chrysler's investment of approximately $1.8 billion in new vehicle programs.

In addition, changes throughout paint and assembly operations will give the facility an all-new level of manufacturing flexibility for multiple product capability.

The Jeep® Wrangler Unlimited EV is a Range-extended Electric Vehicle that provides a glimpse into the future of a "Go Anywhere, Do Anything" vehicle with renowned Jeep Wrangler capability.

The Jeep Wrangler Unlimited EV prototype is a two-wheel drive Wrangler. However, Chrysler's ENVI organization is exploring four-wheel-drive, in-wheel electric motors to demonstrate the full reach of the Company's advanced electric-drive technologies. When this technology is developed by ENVI, the instant high torque of the electric-drive motor and the ability to precisely control each wheel independently will result in off-road capability ideally suited for the Jeep brand, without compromising on-road capability.

The Wrangler Unlimited EV also uses an ENVI Range-extended Electric Vehicle powertrain, consisting of an electric motor, an advanced lithium-ion battery system, and a small gasoline engine with an integrated electric generator to produce additional energy to power the electric-drive system when needed. The electric motor produces 200 kW (268 horsepower) and 400 N•m (295 lb.-ft.) of torque. The Jeep Wrangler Unlimited EV has a range of 400 miles, including 40 miles of zero fuel-consumption, zero-emissions, all-electric operation.

The Jeep Wrangler Unlimited EV features a new ENVI Green Pearl exterior color, integrating full body-side "EV" graphics.

A B-segment Jeep® concept vehicle, the Renegade is a sporty, "minimized" two-seater ideally suited for the all-weather fun of dune-surfing or rock-crawling.

"With an electric motor powering each axle, the Jeep Renegade concept is designed for a 'hang on and have fun experience,'" said Tony Shamenkov, Jeep Renegade concept principal exterior designer.

Constructed of environmentally responsible materials, sustainability is a key theme of the Jeep Renegade concept.

Renegade is targeted at customers in the "Stylish Green" segment of the marketplace - those who are extremely environmentally oriented, appreciate high-tech and innovation, and enjoy performance combined with style in keeping with their "green" attitude.

Jeep Renegade Concept Technology
The advanced propulsion system in the Jeep Renegade concept starts with a 40-mile lithium-ion battery pack. A range extender - in Renegade's case, a small-displacement (1.5-liter, 3-cylinder) BLUETEC diesel engine - allows for journeys beyond 40 miles. In fact, the Jeep Renegade concept boasts a 400-mile range.

Renegade's BLUETEC diesel engine generates an additional 115 horsepower when needed, while greatly reducing exhaust emissions when compared to standard gasoline engines. Renegade is capable of achieving an equivalent petroleum fuel economy of 110 miles per gallon, which is four-to-five times greater than an equivalent gasoline-only vehicle.

The all-new Jeep Renegade concept's lightweight aluminium architecture and regen-braking system help to improve overall efficiency, while dual electric 200 kilowatt (268 horsepower) motors propel a very capable 4x4 system - complete with low range and locking differentials -- worthy of carrying the Jeep name.

Jeep Renegade Concept Exterior
The Jeep Renegade concept's "one-with-nature" personality is emphasized by its large, flaring wheel openings, oversized wheels and tyres, and cut-down speedster windshield -- all of which combine to deliver on the Renegade's promise of cross-country fun and agility.

Among the unique exterior details are "deconstructed" rubber-clad headlamps and tail lamps, as well as just-for-fun elongated triangular openings in each of the two sculpted doors.

While the Renegade features a roll bar, it has no top. Instead, the cargo deck just behind the cockpit can be fitted with a variety of "lids." Options include a plain lid, or lids configured to accommodate the gear of a particular outdoor day-trip activity, such as mountain biking or kayaking. Or it can come "as built" -- with formations designed to accommodate two matching water scooters with open storage underneath. Fluid-fill caps, a plug-in port and a first-aid kit are also included.

Jeep Renegade Concept Interior
Sustainability - a ratio between the energy needed to build and ship the vehicle as compared with the impact these processes have on the environment - is a key focus of the Jeep Renegade concept's interior design.

Materials used in constructing the Jeep Renegade concept were deliberately selected to be environmentally responsible, both in manufacture and end-of-vehicle-life recyclability.

Innovative construction includes one-piece moulded soy-based foam seats and doors, a one-piece co-moulded instrument panel with a urethane skin, a co-moulded aluminium/silicone steering wheel, a one-piece moulded chassis created without using environmentally-harmful resins, and a one-piece moulded interior compartment "tub." This environmental care in designing the Renegade's interior is aligned with Jeep's "harmony with nature" philosophy.

"The Jeep Renegade concept's interior — actually the entire vehicle — is designed to minimise the number of parts necessary for assembly and function," said Scott Anderson, principal interior designer of the Renegade concept. "We designed the Renegade with an eye toward simplification of systems, both in parts and processes."

The HVAC system, for example, is not coolant-based, while the colour, grain and gloss of the interior parts are moulded in one piece. Even the no-gloss exterior colour of the Renegade's lightweight composite body is moulded in to avoid the use of solvents present in automotive paints.

The dual-cockpit instrument panel is symmetrically balanced for easy "plug and play" left-hand drive and right-hand drive applications. There is no conventional wiring. Instead, the instrument panel features wireless electronics in sealed, self-contained units, removable by the customer. The panel is built about an exposed cross-car beam containing an integrated power strip, and on the passenger side, yaw, pitch and roll indicators (also built into the fluid-fill gauges). The instrument panel itself is hollow, allowing ample open storage below the beam. Separately-configured impact-absorbing vinyl-wrapped knee-blockers "float" beneath the cross-car beam.

The thin multi-plane acrylic instrument cluster mounts to the steering column, while the similar but separate centre control screen mounts on a swivel base -- providing easy access to both occupants.

Located at the intersection of the steering wheel's T-shaped spokes, the circular LED screen rotates, allowing the driver to select the drive mode, while a flattened rim provides roomier thigh clearance. A driver air bag is concealed beneath the screen. Red or green translucent shift buttons allow Park, Reverse or Drive selections.

The Jeep Renegade concept's sporty doors incorporate unique canvas-pull remote "handles," while the rush of the moving landscape visible through the door's elongated openings enhance the feeling of carefree, open-air mobility.

The Renegade's contoured, figure-form seats -- covered in scuba-like waterproof materials that are both soft-touch and flexible -- feature in-seat belts and unusual, hollow, lightweight upside-down "U-shaped" headrests. The seats feature a urethane skin with soy-based foam co-moulded with a composite substructure. The integral seatbelts, along with slender accent strips on the seats and instrument panel, repeat the Palm Metallic exterior colour.

A "thermal unit" in the centre console plugs into the electrical battery pack, permitting food to be either heated or cooled.

"Inspired by the simplicity and functionality of scuba diving gear, we wanted the interior of the Jeep Renegade concept to be weather-tight and durable," Anderson said.

The Renegade's wireless interior is designed to be hosed down. It features a drain in the floor, while the formations built into the floor mat are designed to channel water to the opening. Hollow-section billet-formed pedals float above the tub floor.

Fun, functional and fabricated from recyclable materials, the Jeep Renegade concept offers agile, capable performance without sacrificing the environment its drivers seek to explore.
